Canada’s Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland resigned on Monday following a clash with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. This resignation has delivered a significant blow to Trudeau’s already declining government popularity.

Freeland, known as a close ally of Prime Minister Trudeau, referred to Trudeau’s budget expansion plans as a political gimmick in her resignation letter. She argued that the additional spending posed serious financial risks to Canada.

According to Freeland, the pressure of increased spending would make it difficult to effectively counter the 25% import tariff imposed by newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump.

The resignation comes at a time when an update on Canada’s economic situation is about to be released, indicating a significant fiscal deficit.

Freeland’s departure has added further strain to Trudeau’s government, which is already facing widespread criticism. Experts believe this development could emerge as a major challenge for Trudeau’s political future.
