Day 1,023 of the Russia-Ukraine War: “No Negotiations Without Ensuring Public Safety” - Zelensky

On the 1,023rd day of the Russia-Ukraine war, Russia has intensified its offensive against Ukraine, particularly following the U.S. election and ahead of Trump’s inauguration. Analysts suggest that these actions aim to reinforce Trump’s isolationist stance and justify halting U.S. aid to Ukraine.

According to the UK Ministry of Defense, Russian troop losses have risen sharply, reaching 45,680 in November. Ukrainian military reports indicate Russian losses were 38,130 in September and 41,980 in October.

Escalation of Russian Attacks

The Institute for the Study of War reports that from September to November, Russia seized an average of 22 to 27 square kilometers daily but incurred significant losses, with 125,800 troops affected. Russian drone and missile attacks on Ukraine have also tripled during this period.

North Korean troops have reportedly joined the conflict in support of Russia. Simultaneously, Russia has ramped up information campaigns to influence U.S. public opinion.

Trump’s Position and Ukraine’s Future

If Donald Trump assumes office as U.S. President, American support for Ukraine could diminish. Analysts believe this could strategically strengthen Russia. However, several European nations have pledged continued support for Ukraine.

Countries like Finland, Norway, Denmark, and Sweden have already provided substantial financial aid and plan to maintain their support. Still, Europe remains unable to fully replace U.S. contributions in advanced weaponry.

Zelensky and the Possibility of Peace Talks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has indicated that NATO membership for liberated Ukrainian territories and discussions about Russian-occupied areas might be possible in the future. However, he noted that swift action from NATO is unlikely.

A survey revealed that 64% of Ukrainians believe negotiations with Russia should not proceed without full security guarantees, as any temporary pause could lead to renewed warfare.

The Role of the European Alliance for Ukraine

Various European nations have reiterated their support for Ukraine’s resistance against Russia. However, reduced U.S. aid could exacerbate Ukraine’s military equipment shortages.

Analysts have criticized the lack of a unified strategy among Western nations during Ukraine’s critical moment. The U.S. administration appears reluctant to push for a decisive Ukrainian victory, likely due to the potential global repercussions of a Russian defeat.
