The United Nations General Assembly has passed a resolution calling for an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire in the besieged Gaza Strip. The resolution was adopted through a vote, with 158 countries in favor, 9 against, and 13 abstentions, according to a report by Al Jazeera.
The resolution calls for an end to the conflict in Gaza and urgent measures to address the humanitarian crisis.
According to Al Jazeera, the conflict has so far resulted in 44,805 deaths and 106,257 injuries, with many people still trapped under rubble.
After the resolution was passed, Palestine's representative to the UN, Riyad Mansour, stated, "Gaza has now become a symbol of suffering for humanity." He highlighted the severe human rights violations and the escalating humanitarian crisis affecting millions in Gaza.
Slovenia's UN representative remarked, "Gaza no longer exists; it has been destroyed," adding that the situation poses a significant question for humanity. Algeria's Deputy Ambassador warned, "The world will pay a high price for remaining silent about Palestine's plight."
While the resolution for a permanent ceasefire is not legally binding on Israel, it carries significant political weight. The widespread support for the resolution reflects global opinion, which could exert international pressure.
Both the United States and Israel opposed the resolution. The U.S. argued that any ceasefire must include conditions, particularly the release of hostages.
On the same day, another important resolution was passed in support of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). The resolution condemned Israel's legal actions banning UNRWA's operations in its territory. It urged Israel to respect the agency's mandate and refrain from obstructing its activities.
