Progress in Gaza-Israel Ceasefire Talks Mediated by Donald Trump: Qatar PM
Qatar’s Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani has indicated renewed momentum in the Gaza-Israel ceasefire discussions. Speaking in Doha on Saturday, he said, "We have seen new energy in the negotiations since the elections."
For nearly a year, Qatar and Egypt had mediated between Israel and Hamas, but Qatar withdrew from the talks last month due to a lack of progress and complications arising from Hamas leaders in exile.
However, the intervention of newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump and a shift in Hamas’s stance have prompted Qatar’s Prime Minister to signal positive developments in the discussions.
Role of the U.S. and Other Stakeholders
On November 22, Trump’s Special Envoy for Middle East Affairs, Steve Witkoff, met with Al Thani in Qatar. The following day, he traveled to Israel for talks with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Subsequently, Al Thani held a meeting in Vienna with David Barnea, the head of Israel’s intelligence agency, Mossad.
Hamas’s Flexibility and New Conditions
Under military and diplomatic pressure, Hamas has shown willingness to accept some Israeli conditions. According to sources, Hamas may agree to certain terms, including Israel’s continued control over the Philadelphi Corridor and the Netzarim Corridor.
In a meeting on Sunday, Netanyahu remarked, "Hamas's position has weakened, which helps us secure better terms in the negotiations."
Key Terms of the Agreement
Qatar’s Prime Minister Al Thani emphasized that the primary obstacle to the talks is not technical but a matter of political will. Most of the detailed terms have already been decided.
Analysts suggest that if negotiations proceed swiftly, the long-awaited ceasefire in Gaza could soon become a reality.
