The water level of the Yamuna River has risen in Delhi
The rising waters of the Yamuna River have caused significant damage to the inhabitants of the low-lying areas of Delhi. Water has entered almost every house in these areas. Many people are relying on government relief centers for support. Due to the continuous rise in the Yamuna’s water level, the Wazirabad, Chandrawal, and Okhla water treatment plants have been shut down, aggravating the water crisis in the capital. Residents are struggling to fetch water from hand pumps. Additionally, due to the closure of shops, there is a scarcity of food supplies, leading to distress among the people.
The largest cremation ground in the capital, Nigambodh Ghat, has been shut down due to the flooding caused by the monsoon. This has affected the final rites of loved ones for the residents of Delhi.
Continuous heavy rainfall over the past few days has left several areas in the capital submerged. Houses, markets, roads, and tourist spots have been affected by the inundation. Daily life has been severely disrupted, with water reaching up to the waist or even chest in some areas. Many roads have been closed, affecting transportation as well.
It is worth mentioning that on Friday evening, the water level of the Yamuna had receded to 208.27 meters. However, by Saturday morning, it had risen again. According to the calculations at 8 AM on Saturday, the water level stood at 208.48 meters. In light of this situation, the Delhi government has decided to shut down all schools, colleges, universities, and other educational institutions until Sunday. Delhi’s Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal, has sought the help of the army to manage the flood situation. The army has been deployed accordingly.
Kejriwal blames the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Haryana government for Delhi’s current predicament. The release of water from the Hathnikund Barrage in Haryana into the river has led to the continuous rise in the water level of the Yamuna. Kejriwal alleges that this has resulted in the flooding and waterlogging in Delhi.
