The advertisements have drawn bipartisan backlash, and Trump said Monday night that he would stop using taxpayer funds to pay for them. Instead, he plans to tap MAGA Inc., his super PAC, to cover the costs going forward.

Money from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) was used to award a $20 million contract for the advertisements, which praise Trump and echo his political messaging ahead of the midterm elections.

Trump has not provided details on whether taxpayers would be reimbursed for advertisements that have already aired, nor has he explained how he would arrange for his political organization to pay for them in the future.

AdImpact, which tracks media spending, said that more than $11 million has been spent on the advertisements so far.
