Trump’s Social Media Map Draws Reactions in the North Atlantic

President Donald Trump’s latest social media post featuring a map of North America has prompted responses from officials in Denmark and Iceland.

During the long holiday weekend, Trump posted a map on Truth Social depicting the United States in the colors of the American flag, with the country shown across North America and extending to Greenland and Iceland. The post did not include an explanation of the map.

The image drew attention because Trump has previously discussed making Canada the 51st U.S. state and has repeatedly expressed interest in acquiring Greenland, a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said Tuesday that the post was inappropriate. Speaking to Danish broadcaster DR, he said it appeared to indicate that Trump continued to hold what he described as a “maximalist vision.”

“We need to rein that in,” Rasmussen said.

The post also prompted a diplomatic response from Iceland. Foreign Secretary Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir summoned U.S. Ambassador Billy Long for a meeting, where she conveyed that Iceland considered the post unacceptable, according to Iceland’s national broadcaster RÚV.

The reactions come amid broader tensions over U.S. statements concerning Greenland and Canada. Trump’s previous comments about Greenland have generated concern in Denmark and among Greenlandic authorities, while his remarks about Canada have also been met with opposition in Ottawa.

The latest incident has added to scrutiny of U.S. policy toward its North American and North Atlantic neighbors, although Trump’s post did not state that the United States intends to change the territorial status of either Greenland or Iceland.
