Legendary Mountaineer Nirmal Purja Among 10 Killed in Pakistan Avalanche

A tragic avalanche struck Broad Peak in Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan region, killing 10 climbers, including world-renowned Nepali-British mountaineer Nirmal “Nimsdai” Purja.

According to rescue authorities and Purja’s expedition company, the climbers were caught beneath massive snow after an avalanche struck during their ascent. Rescue operations were hampered by severe weather, high altitude, and extremely difficult terrain before the victims’ bodies were gradually recovered.

The deceased reportedly include climbers from Nepal, Pakistan, the United States, Oman, and China.

Nirmal Purja was widely regarded as one of the greatest mountaineers of the modern era. In 2019, he made history by climbing all 14 of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks in just 189 days, setting a remarkable world record. He also led the first successful winter ascent of K2 in 2021, earning worldwide recognition.

The tragedy has prompted an outpouring of grief across the international mountaineering community. Climbers, athletes, and public figures from around the world have paid tribute to Purja and the other victims.

Experts note that Pakistan’s Karakoram Range is one of the world’s most hazardous mountain regions, where sudden weather changes and avalanches pose constant threats. The disaster once again highlights the extreme risks faced by climbers attempting the world’s highest peaks.
