Maroof stated, "Economic and trade relations are not only crucial for national prosperity but have also become a key driver of diplomatic relations. Today, through trade and investment, peace, cooperation, and shared prosperity are achievable," he said. He further noted that economic collaboration has surpassed traditional geopolitical rivalries and opened new pathways for establishing strong diplomatic ties and strategic alliances.
Turning to the bilateral relationship between Pakistan and Bangladesh, Maroof remarked, "Currently, bilateral trade between Pakistan and Bangladesh stands at approximately $1 billion, but given the economic potential and complementarities of the two nations, this figure should be significantly higher." He underscored the importance of political will and trade facilitation measures to enhance trade and explore new avenues of cooperation in sectors like textiles, agriculture, energy, and technology.
The High Commissioner also pointed to the immense opportunities within South Asia, suggesting that removing trade barriers, simplifying customs procedures, and increasing investment could pave the way for shared prosperity. He emphasized that the region's vast population and economic potential could transform South Asia into a powerful economic bloc.
Notable steps have already been taken to improve trade between Pakistan and Bangladesh. Maroof highlighted recent progress, such as the reduction of 100% cargo checks on Pakistani goods at Bangladeshi ports, which has incentivized Pakistani businesses to engage in trade with Bangladesh. Additionally, he mentioned that a direct vessel from Karachi to Chittagong reached its destination in just ten days on November 11, 2024, signaling positive developments in trade connectivity.
