EU Foreign Policy Chief Josep Borrell Calls for Sanctions on Israel Over Alleged War Crimes

Josep Borrell, the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, has urged the bloc to take decisive action against Israel for alleged war crimes in Gaza and Lebanon.

Borrell criticized the EU's leniency toward Israel, accusing the bloc of shielding the Israeli government from meaningful consequences. Highlighting violations of international law in Gaza and Lebanon, he proposed measures including a ban on imports from Israel and the suspension of political dialogue with the Israeli government. He also called for a shift in the EU’s approach to Israel.

The EU Foreign Affairs Council is scheduled to discuss Borrell’s proposals next week.

Condemning attacks on healthcare workers in conflict zones, Borrell said these actions constitute serious violations of international humanitarian law. He emphasized that the protection of medical personnel in such areas is non-negotiable and firmly established under international law.

Borrell specifically condemned the recent killing of 12 paramedics by Israeli forces near Lebanon’s Baalbek Valley, calling the act "abhorrent" and reiterating the EU's commitment to ensuring accountability.

This marks a significant moment as the EU considers a potential shift in its policies toward Israel amid escalating tensions in the region.
