Sri Lanka's President Anura Kumara Dissanayake's Party Wins Landslide Victory in Parliamentary Election

Sri Lanka's left-wing President Anura Kumara Dissanayake's political coalition, the National People's Power (NPP), has secured a decisive victory in the country's early parliamentary elections. The election, held on Thursday, took place just seven weeks after Dissanayake took office as president in September. The victory was confirmed by the French news agency AFP on Friday, November 15.

Since assuming office, Dissanayake has focused on policies aimed at poverty reduction and combating corruption, granting him greater legal powers to address these issues. Under his leadership, Sri Lanka has made significant strides in recovering from its economic downturn.

Dissanayake, considered somewhat of a political outsider in Sri Lanka's long-standing dynastic political system, won the presidency comfortably in September. In Thursday’s election, his party won at least 107 of the 225 parliamentary seats, securing nearly 62 percent of the vote, or approximately 6.8 million votes. This result ensures that the NPP has surpassed the majority threshold in Parliament.

Local media suggest that, under the proportional representation system, the NPP's seat count in the 225-member parliament could exceed 150 seats, further solidifying their dominance in the nation's legislative body.
