Kristi Noem Tapped as Homeland Security Secretary in Trump Administration

South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem is set to take on the role of Secretary of Homeland Security in President-elect Donald Trump’s administration, according to two sources familiar with the decision, Reuters reported on Tuesday.

Noem, who was previously speculated to be Trump’s running mate, emerged as a key figure in national politics during the COVID-19 pandemic by opposing mandatory mask mandates in her state. She was re-elected as South Dakota’s governor in 2022 with a decisive victory.

In a memoir published earlier this year, Noem recounted shooting an “unruly” dog at her home, sparking widespread criticism. Despite controversies, Trump has reportedly chosen Noem for the vital role in his administration.

Homeland Security and Its Significance

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) oversees a wide range of responsibilities, including public safety, border security, immigration, and disaster response. Additionally, the Secret Service, which ensures the President’s safety, operates under this department.

Attempts by Reuters to contact both Trump’s campaign and Noem’s office for confirmation went unanswered.

Trump’s Cabinet Shaping Up

Ahead of his official inauguration on January 20 as the 47th President of the United States, Trump has begun assembling a loyal team. He has already named Susie Wiles, his campaign co-chair, as White House Chief of Staff.

Trump has also announced Tom Homan as his pick to oversee immigration policy and Elise Stefanik, a Congresswoman from New York, as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.

Other key appointments reportedly include Florida Senator Marco Rubio as Secretary of State, Michael Waltz as National Security Advisor, and Lee Zeldin, a long-time Trump ally, as head of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

These appointments underscore Trump’s commitment to building a cabinet of staunch allies as he prepares for his second term in office.
