yrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa arrived in the United States on Saturday for an official visit, becoming the first Syrian leader to set foot in Washington in over 25 years, officials confirmed.

Al-Sharaa was received at Andrews Air Force Base by U.S. officials and representatives from the State Department. According to diplomatic sources, the visit aims to discuss regional stability, counterterrorism cooperation, and humanitarian aid for post-war Syria.

The White House described the visit as part of a “limited engagement process” intended to explore possibilities for peace and reconstruction in Syria after years of devastating conflict.

“The United States remains committed to a political solution in Syria that respects the sovereignty, unity, and rights of all Syrians,” a State Department spokesperson said.

President al-Sharaa’s visit follows a series of regional diplomatic openings, including renewed ties between Syria and several Arab states. Analysts say the trip could mark a significant shift in U.S.–Syria relations, though deep differences remain over sanctions, human rights, and the role of foreign powers in the region.

Al-Sharaa is expected to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump and members of Congress during his stay, before heading to New York for meetings at the United Nations.
