“Gratitude to Saudi Arabia for Supporting France’s Historic Commitment to Recognize Palestine as a State” – President Mahmoud Abbas
[Riyadh, July 26, 2025] —
As France formally announced its plan to recognize Palestine as an independent state during the upcoming UN General Assembly, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas hailed the move as a “historic victory” and expressed sincere gratitude to Saudi Arabia for its support in facilitating the decision.
In a letter sent Thursday to President Abbas, French President Emmanuel Macron stated:
“This solution is the only path that can fulfill the legitimate aspirations of both Israelis and Palestinians. It must now be implemented as swiftly as possible.”
Macron also warned:
“The prospect of resolving the Middle East conflict through dialogue is diminishing day by day. I cannot accept that.”
Acknowledging France’s position, President Abbas said:
“This decision is a historic victory for the Palestinian people. I call on other nations to follow the same path to accelerate the implementation of the two-state solution.”
Abbas specifically praised Saudi Arabia’s role, noting that Riyadh has long supported the establishment of a Palestinian state and has strongly condemned Israeli aggression in both Gaza and the West Bank.
To date, more than 140 countries around the world have recognized Palestine as an independent state. France’s announcement now adds another powerful European voice to that list.
President Macron confirmed that France will officially declare its recognition of Palestine during the September session of the UN General Assembly. The announcement has triggered renewed debate in international politics, particularly among Israel and its allies.
In this context, the political future and self-determination of the Palestinian people has once again taken center stage on the global stage.
