Powerful Earthquakes Strike Russia’s Pacific Coast, Tsunami Warning Issued Across the Region
[Kamchatka, Russia | July 20, 2025] — A series of powerful earthquakes struck the eastern Pacific coast of Russia on Saturday, prompting tsunami warnings across the region. Both the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and Germany’s Geoforschungszentrum (GFZ) confirmed the seismic activity.
According to the USGS, three significant earthquakes hit near the coast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky within just 32 minutes. Two of the quakes measured magnitude 6.7, while the third reached a powerful 7.4. An earlier quake measuring 5.0 had also been recorded in the same region. Authorities later reported at least three aftershocks, one of which reached a magnitude of 6.6.
GFZ initially reported a magnitude 6.7 quake but later revised the figure to 7.4. The agency warned that such seismic events significantly increase the risk of tsunamis in coastal areas.
Located within the Pacific "Ring of Fire," the Kamchatka Peninsula frequently experiences earthquakes, though such a cluster of powerful tremors is considered rare.
According to the official website of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the city currently has a population of over 163,152 residents. Local authorities and emergency response agencies have urged people to evacuate from coastal zones to safer inland areas.
Areas under tsunami warnings include parts of Kamchatka, Japan, and Alaska. No reports of casualties or major damage have yet been confirmed.
Residents along the coast have been advised to closely follow the guidance of local authorities.
