For over five months, Israel has been launching relentless attacks on the Gaza Strip of Palestine. Aid is not being allowed to enter there. Most of Gaza’s Palestinian population is living in dire conditions, struggling with hunger and malnutrition. Reports of child deaths due to starvation are emerging from Gaza.
The United Nations states that a quarter of Gaza’s population is on the brink of famine, with children dying from malnutrition. Ursula von der Leyen has stated that in coordination with the United Arab Emirates and a charity organization called World Central Kitchen, aid will be sent to Gaza through this corridor. However, sending aid in this manner will be challenging. Discussions will be held with Israel to facilitate the passage of aid on the ground.
Israel’s Foreign Ministry has welcomed the maritime corridor and urged other countries to join in.
Earlier yesterday, Thursday, President Joe Biden announced that the United States military will construct a port in the Gaza Strip for sending aid through the maritime route. However, following the president’s announcement, American officials stated that it would take several weeks to build the port.
