Country and abroad democracy under threat: Biden

United States President Joe Biden has commented that there is a threat to democracy both domestically and internationally. He made this statement, claiming the former American President Donald Trump’s stance on the NATO military alliance was commendable.

In his State of the Union address on March 7th, Biden criticized Trump’s invitation to Russian President Vladimir Putin for attacks in other countries if defense spending doesn’t increase. Biden said, “Currently, my predecessor, former Republican President Putin, is telling him, ‘Do as you please.'” Biden added, “I find it reprehensible, violent, and unacceptable.” At the same time, Biden urged Congress to provide further economic assistance to Ukraine, currently at war with Russia, in response to Putin’s intentions. He stated, “We will not be taken advantage of.” The differences between Biden and Trump on democracy, abortion rights, and the economy were also highlighted in the speech.

At the beginning of the speech, Biden made a joke, saying, “If I were smart, I would have gone home by now.” Like in previous years, American First Lady Jill Biden was also present during the speech. However, President Biden encountered protests on his way from the White House to Capitol Hill. Protesters attempted to obstruct Biden. Nearly 200 protesters gathered on Pennsylvania Avenue. Palestinian flags and banners were seen in their hands. The banner read, “Biden’s rule is genocide.”

Many protesters were wearing black clothes, indicating their opposition to war. Police presence was observed there. Later, Biden’s convoy was diverted to another route to avoid the protesters. However, the disciplined security forces of the United States did not comment on this matter.
