Meeting Between Bangladesh’s Interim Government Chief Dr. Yunus and BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman in London
[London, June 13, 2025]
A much-discussed meeting took place between Professor Muhammad Yunus, Chief Advisor of Bangladesh’s interim government, and Tarique Rahman, Acting Chairman of the BNP, at the Dorchester Hotel in London. The meeting began at 9:10 AM on Friday and lasted for nearly one and a half hours.
Akbar Hossain, Press Minister of the Bangladesh High Commission, confirmed the matter to BBC Bangla. He stated that the meeting was private and direct between Professor Yunus and Mr. Rahman. However, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, a member of BNP’s Standing Committee, was also present at the hotel, although it is believed he did not actively participate in the meeting.
On the other hand, Khalilur Rahman, National Security Advisor of the Bangladesh government, along with several senior diplomats from the London embassy, were also present in the hotel vicinity, which underscores the significance of this meeting.
Political Context and Possible Agenda
This meeting occurred at a time when political instability and disputes are at their peak surrounding Bangladesh’s national elections. The BNP continues to demand a neutral government during elections, while the interim government, under international scrutiny, seeks dialogue and compromise with political parties.
Multiple BNP sources reveal that the party initially showed reluctance to attend this meeting but later agreed, considering the possibility of discussing the election timing and framework. Notably, prior to the UK visit, Professor Yunus’s office and advisory council reached out to Tarique Rahman.
Political Analysts’ Perspective
Analysts view this meeting as a potential “political milestone,” especially if it opens a pathway for compromise between the BNP and the government. Although details of the discussion have not been officially disclosed, diplomatic circles speculate that issues such as election schedules, caretaker government structure, and conditions for opposition participation were discussed.
International Observation
The UK and the Western world are closely monitoring the situation in Bangladesh. This high-level meeting in London could signal the possibility of resolving the political crisis to the international community.
