Beirut, May 23 –
The process of disarming Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon is set to begin next month, according to a Lebanese government official speaking to French news agency AFP. The decision was made during Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’s visit to Lebanon.
The disarmament process is scheduled to initially start around mid-June in refugee camps located in Beirut and will be gradually implemented in other camps across the country.
This move follows the first meeting of a newly formed joint Lebanese-Palestinian committee, established to address issues concerning the refugee camps.
A statement from the Lebanese Prime Minister’s office said, “The committee has agreed to begin the process of handing over weapons based on a set timetable. At the same time, practical steps will be taken to guarantee the economic and social rights of Palestinian refugees.”
President Mahmoud Abbas has been in Beirut since Wednesday, holding discussions aimed at establishing full Lebanese sovereignty over its territory, including the disarmament of Palestinian camps.
Notably, both Palestinian and Lebanese leaders have agreed that Palestinian refugee camps will be brought under Lebanese state control. To facilitate this, a joint committee has been formed.
This initiative is being seen as a significant step forward toward affirming Lebanon’s sovereignty.
