During his visit to India, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance stated that if India and the United States collaborate successfully, the 21st century could become a time of peace and prosperity; however, failure in this cooperation could turn it into a "dark era" for all of humanity.
In a speech delivered today (Tuesday) at the International Convention Centre in the city of Jaipur, Rajasthan, Vance said:
"If India and the United States work together, we will witness a peaceful and prosperous century. But if we fail, the 21st century could be devastating for humanity."
He also emphasized the importance of U.S. defense and energy equipment exports during his India visit and noted that there is significant potential to deepen trade relations between the two nations.
Though Vance’s trip is primarily a personal one, he is accompanied by his wife—who comes from a family of Indian immigrants—and their three children. On Monday night, Vance attended a dinner with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and he praised Modi multiple times during his speech.
"Prime Minister Modi is a tough negotiator. He takes a strong stance on deals," Vance remarked, drawing laughter from the audience.
The timing of the visit is considered important, as India is eager to finalize a preliminary trade agreement with the United States—especially before the 90-day pause on high U.S. tariffs, introduced during the administration of President Donald Trump, comes to an end.
India’s Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman mentioned in San Francisco on Monday that the goal is to complete the first phase of the agreement positively by the fall.
Vance also confirmed that his trade discussions with Modi have made good progress, and both countries have now outlined the framework for a final agreement.
"This has created a roadmap that will lead us toward a final deal between our two nations," Vance said.
