Paris, April 14, 2025 —
Algeria has ordered 12 officials from the French Embassy to leave the country within 48 hours, French Foreign Minister confirmed to the French daily Le Figaro.
French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin stated, “This decision is likely a reaction to the recent arrest of three Algerian nationals in France for serious crimes.”
Speaking to BFM TV, Darmanin said, “This decision is completely unjustified.”
He further added, “We had committed to building a bridge of dialogue with the Algerian government in the interest of both our countries. I call on the Algerian authorities to reconsider this expulsion, which is unrelated to any ongoing legal process.”
Darmanin warned that if the expulsion is enforced, France will respond with immediate reciprocal measures.
