Myanmar, March 30, 2025: A devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on Friday, killing at least 1,700 people. Initially, the military government reported that 3,400 people were injured and more than 300 people are missing. The earthquake caused widespread destruction in the country's war-torn regions, where many buildings, bridges, and roads have been destroyed.
Senior General Min Aung Hlaing of the Myanmar government has warned that the death toll may rise further, and the need for international assistance has become increasingly urgent. The Myanmar government has already called for international aid.
India, China, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Russia have sent rescue teams and relief supplies to Myanmar. In a statement, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said, "The scale of the damage is enormous, and humanitarian needs are increasing by the minute."
Myanmar's hospitals are struggling to treat the injured, and local people are conducting rescue operations with limited resources. Due to delays in aid operations in various parts of the country, many people are continuing rescue efforts on their own.
Meanwhile, the United States has pledged $2 million in humanitarian aid and is preparing to send an emergency response team from USAID.
The earthquake has severely damaged the country’s infrastructure, including bridges, roads, airports, and railways, which is posing challenges for rescue and relief operations. This disaster could lead to a larger humanitarian crisis for Myanmar’s 55 million people.
