After 15 months of conflict, Israel and Hamas have reached a ceasefire agreement. Al Jazeera has highlighted the humanitarian situation and the extent of the damage in Gaza.

Israel began its attack on Palestinians on October 7, 2023, which is still ongoing. In the first attack, more than 1,100 people were killed, and 240 were taken hostage. Later, some of Hamas’s captives were freed through a prisoner exchange, and others were killed in subsequent Israeli attacks.

In these 15 months, at least 46,707 people have been killed in Gaza, including nearly 18,000 children. The actual death toll is feared to be even higher, as human rights organizations believe the real number could be much more.

A total of 110,265 people have been injured in Gaza, with 22,500 suffering severe injuries requiring lifetime care. According to UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency), every day 10 children lose one or both of their legs.

Additionally, 85,000 tons of explosives have been dropped on Gaza, causing long-term environmental damage. The United Nations Development Programme has stated that it will take more than a decade to clear the more than 42 million tons of debris.

The food crisis is also deepening. According to international humanitarian aid organizations, efforts to deliver aid to Gaza have reached a "breaking point." Around 1.9 million people in Gaza have become homeless, with nearly 80 percent of them struggling to survive in the harsh winter conditions.

Furthermore, nearly 110,000 residents of Gaza living in inadequate shelters are at risk of death due to the cold.
