Two Finnair flights departing Helsinki received bomb threats on Thursday, prompting security checks in Rome and Vienna as airlines and airports across Europe dealt with a series of similar incidents.

Both aircraft reached their destinations safely, and Finnair confirmed that neither threat was genuine.

The first incident involved flight AY1761 from Helsinki to Rome, carrying 144 passengers and seven crew members.

Italian fighter jets escorted the aircraft to Rome's Fiumicino Airport, where it landed at 9.27am local time, according to Italian broadcaster RAI.

Finnair confirmed that authorities inspected the aircraft after passengers disembarked and found nothing suspicious.

The second threat concerned flight AY1471 from Helsinki to Vienna, operated by Danish airline Jettime on behalf of Finnair. The aircraft also landed safely, with passengers leaving the plane before security procedures continued.

The incidents formed part of a series of bomb threats affecting European aviation during the week.

An Aer Lingus flight travelling from Dublin to Rome diverted to the Évreux military airbase in France following a security alert. A Wizz Air flight from Milan to Warsaw also landed in Vienna after a reported bomb threat.

Reuters reported that three aircraft in Bulgaria made emergency landings following similar warnings. Czech police also reported threats involving four flights bound for Prague, while another aircraft departing Warsaw landed in Brussels after a suspicious message.

Finnair declined to disclose how it received the threats or whether investigators suspected any connection between the incidents.

Italian authorities received anonymous warnings concerning suspected explosives, according to RAI.
