Finland and Norway Hold Rare Talks with Russian President Putin Amid Ukraine War

Finland and Norway have taken an important diplomatic step by holding a rare 90-minute telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on October 27, 2026.
Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre discussed the ongoing war in Ukraine, possible peace negotiations and security concerns across Europe.
During the conversation, the leaders emphasized the importance of finding a diplomatic solution to end the war and restoring stability in the region.
The discussion also focused on protecting Ukraine's energy infrastructure, European security and maintaining stability in the Baltic Sea region.
President Stubb highlighted Finland's strong interest in regional peace, particularly because Finland shares approximately 1,340 kilometres of land border with Russia.
Meanwhile, President Putin reiterated Russia's position on the conflict and expressed interest in restoring relations with European countries.
The diplomatic contact is being viewed as a significant development in Northern European politics. However, it does not yet indicate a formal improvement in relations between Finland and Russia.
