Finland's Unemployment Rate Remains Among the Highest in the EU

Finland continues to face significant challenges in its labour market, with the unemployment rate remaining among the highest in the European Union.

According to recent figures, Finland's unemployment rate reached approximately 10.4% in September 2026, reflecting ongoing economic difficulties. This means that roughly one in ten people in the labour force was unemployed during the period.

The increase in unemployment has been linked to weak economic growth, reduced hiring, and uncertainty affecting several industries. Construction, manufacturing, retail, and other sectors sensitive to consumer demand have faced particular pressure. Young people and individuals with limited work experience may also find it more difficult to enter the labour market.

For foreign workers, the situation can be especially challenging. Many vacancies require Finnish or Swedish language skills, while employers may also prioritise candidates with local qualifications, professional networks, or previous experience in Finland. However, opportunities continue to exist in sectors such as healthcare, technology, cleaning, logistics, hospitality, and seasonal work, depending on the region and the applicant’s qualifications.
