Tokyo, January 7 – U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken's visit to Japan has been overshadowed by President Joe Biden's decision to block Nippon Steel's $14.9 billion bid to acquire U.S. Steel. On Tuesday, Blinken met with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba in Tokyo.

In this farewell visit, Blinken held meetings with Japanese leaders aimed at strengthening the growing trilateral relationship between Washington, Seoul, and Tokyo to counter China's rising military power. However, the ongoing political turmoil in South Korea has complicated these efforts.

President-elect Donald Trump has also opposed the Nippon Steel deal. Both countries share concerns over China's increasing military strength and have aligned on this issue.

Biden's decision has placed additional strain on Japan-U.S. relations, which was evident during Blinken's farewell visit.
