Podgorica, Montenegro, January 2: In a small town of Cetinje in Montenegro, a man went on a rampage, killing 12 people before attempting suicide. The attacker later succumbed to his injuries. This marks one of the deadliest mass killings in the country’s history.
According to police, the attacker was identified as 45-year-old Aleksandar Aco Martinovic. On Wednesday afternoon, following an altercation at a restaurant, he initially shot and killed four people. He then proceeded to three other locations, killing eight more, including two children.
Following the attack, police cornered him near his home, where he attempted to take his own life. He later died en route to the hospital. Police reported that the attacker was heavily intoxicated and had a history of illegal firearms possession.
This is the second such incident in Cetinje since 2022, when a gunman killed 10 people, including two children. Police have stated that Wednesday’s attack was not linked to organized crime.
Montenegrin Prime Minister Milojko Spajic described the incident as a “terrible tragedy” and declared three days of national mourning. President Jakov Milatovic also expressed his condolences.
The government is considering stricter firearm regulations, including the possibility of a complete ban on weapons. However, implementing such a ban may face opposition in Montenegro, a country with a deeply rooted gun culture.
