"Canada Should Be the 51st State of the United States," Trump Tells Trudeau
Washington: U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has once again mocked Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, stating that he had the opportunity to dine with the "great governor of Canada," Trudeau.
The strained relationship between Trudeau and Trump stems from Trump's announcement to impose a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico if they do not take stronger measures against drugs, particularly fentanyl, and immigrants crossing the border. Trudeau has described the tariffs as "severely damaging to Canada's economy."
Trump went a step further, proposing that Canada become the 51st state of the United States. He referred to Trudeau as "Governor Justin Trudeau" and mentioned that their deep discussions would be fruitful.
Trudeau’s Response
Speaking at an event hosted by the Halifax Chamber of Commerce, Trudeau stated, "Americans are starting to realize that imposing tariffs on everything from Canada will make their cost of living even more expensive." Trudeau challenged Trump, saying that if the tariffs are implemented, Canada will respond accordingly.
Unannounced Meeting at Mar-a-Lago
Trudeau held an unannounced meeting with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. The two leaders discussed drugs, illegal immigration, and trade. If Trump's tariff plan is implemented, the future of U.S.-Canada relations could become even more strained.
