EU Membership Talks Suspended Until 2028 Amid Violent Police Response to Pro-EU Protests in Georgia
Tbilisi– Georgia has decided to effectively suspend discussions on EU membership until 2028, a move described as “heartbreaking” by the European Union Ambassador to Georgia. The announcement came alongside strong condemnation of the violent police response to pro-EU protests in the capital, Tbilisi, on Thursday.
During the protests, which were organized by young pro-EU supporters, police used water cannons, pepper spray, and tear gas against demonstrators who were expressing anger over the government’s decision to halt the EU accession process. The protestors, some wearing masks, were voicing their opposition to the suspension of the EU application procedure.
The ruling Georgian Dream Party has blamed “Brussels' blackmail” for the suspension, claiming they were forced into the decision due to pressure from the European Union. The move has sparked widespread outrage among opposition groups, who have called for further protests against the government's decision. One opposition leader stated, “This step has darkened the country’s future. We will continue the movement to protect the interests of the people.”
The EU Ambassador to Georgia expressed disappointment, stating that the people of Georgia have long desired closer ties with the European Union. "This decision is not only against the people's aspirations but also an affront to their dreams," the ambassador said.
As tensions rise and protests continue, analysts warn that the political crisis in Georgia may deepen, potentially leading to further instability in the country.
