Lebanese Prime Minister Calls for Military Strengthening and Presidential Elections Following Ceasefire Agreement

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati, in a televised address following the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah, stated that "war, tragedy, and devastation are enough." He emphasized that Lebanon would focus on strengthening its military forces and re-establishing government authority across all regions of the country.

Mikati announced that the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) would take the lead in efforts to rebuild the country, with a specific focus on strengthening legitimate institutions. "From today, we begin the reconstruction of the ruins and reinforcing the role of legitimate institutions. The military will spearhead this effort, and we have high hopes for them," he said.

Lebanese officials revealed that the number of troops deployed in southern Lebanon would be increased to 10,000, doubling the current number.

Mikati also mentioned the heavy toll of the Israel-Hezbollah conflict, with at least 46 soldiers reported dead. He called on Israel to adhere to the ceasefire terms and withdraw its forces from all Lebanese territories. "Our people have the right to return to their land and live in peace," he added.

With Lebanon's presidency vacant for over two years, Mikati expressed hope for a new chapter in the country's political landscape. "I hope that Lebanon will begin a new chapter. I hope that in the coming days, we will have a new president," Mikati said.

The Prime Minister also highlighted that Lebanon now has the opportunity to move towards a stable future through the ceasefire, signaling a positive outlook for the country's recovery and future elections.
