In Paris, a massive rally brought together men and women holding purple placards and chanting slogans advocating for women’s rights and abortion access. French newspaper Le Monde reported that around 80,000 people and 400 organizations participated in the Paris demonstration. Similar protests also took place in smaller cities like Rennes and Lyon, drawing significant crowds.
Concerns Over Abortion Rights and U.S. Influence
Protesters expressed apprehension about potential restrictions on women’s rights in the United States, particularly in light of Donald Trump’s bid for re-election. In 2022, Trump’s running mate, J.D. Vance, made comments supporting a national abortion ban, though he later advocated for state-level policies.
France has recently enshrined abortion rights in its constitution as a response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2022 decision to overturn federal abortion protections. Although abortion was legalized in France in 1975, this constitutional amendment solidifies the right permanently.
Solidarity with Gisèle Pelichet Case
Demonstrators also showed solidarity with Gisèle Pelichet, a woman whose former husband, Dominique Pelichet, along with 50 others, has been accused of drugging and sexually assaulting her. Dominique admitted to these allegations in September.
Statement from Feminist Collective Nous Toutes
Maëlle Noir, a representative of the feminist organization Nous Toutes, highlighted the widespread nature of violence, stating, “Tragically, perpetrators of violence can be anyone—our brothers, fathers, colleagues, or bosses. This realization is a shock for many.”
These protests serve as a powerful message to end violence against women and secure their rights in France.
