Manobi: Nine Years of Women Rising

Manobi, a Barishal-based organization focused on women’s empowerment, skills development and social initiatives, has stepped into its 10th year of operation, marking nearly a decade of work aimed at creating opportunities for women and young people in southern Bangladesh.

Founded by Afsana Meem, Manobi began as a local initiative and has gradually expanded its activities into women’s entrepreneurship, professional skills development, financial literacy, career-oriented training and community service.

Over the years, the organization has collaborated with different social and development organizations to conduct training and capacity-building programs in Barishal.

Among its documented initiatives, Manobi partnered with Lightshore Foundation to organize training for women entrepreneurs on social media marketing, SEO and content creation. Another financial literacy initiative provided women entrepreneurs with practical knowledge on personal finance, investment decisions and small-business financial management.

The organization has also worked to create career-oriented opportunities through its “Shonirvor Manobi” (স্বনির্ভর মানবী) initiative. In 2023, Manobi organized a three-day photography training program for young women in Barishal, combining classroom learning with practical photography experience and career guidance.

Its activities have extended beyond professional development. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Manobi joined other youth and social organizations in Barishal in humanitarian efforts to provide food assistance to people affected by the crisis.

Manobi has also been associated with training initiatives covering areas such as English-language learning and other practical skills, reflecting its broader goal of helping participants develop capabilities that can contribute to greater independence.

Founder Afsana Meem has remained closely associated with the organization’s journey from a grassroots initiative to an established name within Barishal’s women and youth development community.

As Manobi enters its 10th year, the milestone represents not only the longevity of an organization but also nearly a decade of efforts centered on skills, opportunity and self-reliance.

From community service to entrepreneurship and career development, Manobi’s journey reflects the growing role of locally led organizations in creating opportunities for women outside Bangladesh’s major metropolitan centers.

With its 10th year now underway, Manobi begins the next chapter of its journey from Barishal, continuing its focus on empowering women through knowledge, skills and opportunities.
