US Government Funds TV Ad Featuring Trump’s Midterm Messaging
At first glance, a television advertisement featuring President Donald Trump may appear to be a typical Republican campaign commercial. The 30-second spot shows images of Trump while declaring that “America will never be a communist country” and highlighting what it calls the “largest tax cuts in history.”
But near the end of the advertisement, a line of text at the bottom of the screen says: “Paid for by the U.S. government.”
According to AdImpact, a firm that tracks political and media spending, the advertisement cost about $14,000 and aired during conservative programming on Fox News and Newsmax.
It remains unclear which U.S. government agency or entity paid for the advertisement. The White House, Fox News and Newsmax did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The advertisement does not explicitly tell voters whom to support in the upcoming midterm elections. However, its messaging closely mirrors themes used by Trump and other Republicans in their political campaigns, including at the Republican Party’s convention in Dallas earlier this month.
Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland, who could become chairman of the House Judiciary Committee if Democrats win a majority in November, criticized the advertisement in a social media post.
Raskin said government employees’ involvement in producing such a video could constitute a violation of the Hatch Act. He also argued that using government resources for political campaign purposes would conflict with multiple federal ethics provisions.
Republicans have also criticized the advertisement.
However, it remains unclear which government agency was responsible for the commercial, who authorized its production and how the use of taxpayer-funded resources was determined to be permissible.
