UIU Makes Bangladesh Drone History, Ranks Fourth Globally at SUAS 2026
United International University’s (UIU) Aerial Robotics Team (UART) has achieved a historic milestone for Bangladesh by securing fourth place globally at the Student Unmanned Aerial Systems (SUAS) 2026 Competition held in Oklahoma, United States.
The achievement is particularly significant as this was UIU UART’s first participation in the international competition. The final round was held from September 14 to 17, 2026, at the Skyway Range in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
The four-day competition brought together leading university teams from around the world. Despite challenging weather conditions, including strong winds and high temperatures, UIU’s team successfully demonstrated its technological innovation, engineering expertise and operational capabilities to finish fourth.
According to information provided by UIU, this marks the first time a Bangladeshi team has secured such a high position in the history of the SUAS competition.
The SUAS competition, which has been held regularly since 2003, is regarded as a major international competition for student-developed unmanned aerial systems. This year, 81 teams from different countries entered the preliminary stage. Of them, 67 were selected for the flying stage, 64 received flight-readiness approval and 58 ultimately conducted flights.
Weather conditions created significant difficulties during the competition. UIU said that 21 of the teams conducting flights experienced crashes due to strong winds, high temperatures and other challenges. Despite the difficult conditions, UART made rapid strategic and technical adjustments and successfully completed its mission.
UIU competed alongside teams from internationally renowned institutions, including Cornell University, Monash University, The Ohio State University, the University of Maryland and Warsaw University of Technology.
According to UIU, UART earned full marks in Safety Inspection and Rapid Response. The university also said the team distinguished itself by successfully completing its mission autonomously.
The achievement was the result of extensive research, engineering development, design, construction, testing and continuous refinement. The team’s autonomous unmanned aerial vehicle incorporates technologies including autonomous navigation, aerial mapping, object detection, payload delivery, obstacle detection and avoidance, and multiple safety systems.
The integration of these technologies enabled the aircraft to perform its assigned tasks successfully even under challenging environmental conditions.
UIU said the achievement reflects the combined efforts of its students, faculty members and institutional support. The university hopes the success will encourage more young Bangladeshis to pursue research and innovation in robotics, artificial intelligence, autonomous systems and advanced engineering technologies.
The fourth-place finish also represents a significant international achievement for Bangladesh’s growing university-level robotics and unmanned aerial systems research, demonstrating the ability of Bangladeshi students to compete alongside teams from leading institutions around the world.
