Trump Marks 25th 9/11 Anniversary as US Moves to Revive Iowa Nuclear Plant

President Donald Trump began his shortened workweek in Washington by speaking at an event marking the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

The event, called “Steel Across America,” featured a steel beam from the World Trade Center that had been transported across the country.

Trump said he attended the event to reaffirm the “sacred vow” made 25 years ago to never forget those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks.

$1.9 Billion Loan to Restart Closed Iowa Nuclear Plant

The U.S. Department of Energy is providing up to $1.9 billion in loans to NextEra Energy to help restart the shuttered Duane Arnold Energy Center in Iowa.

Google wants to purchase carbon-free electricity from the facility to power its cloud and artificial intelligence infrastructure. NextEra Energy and Google announced their partnership to restart the plant in October last year.

The Trump administration is investing billions of dollars to expand nuclear power generation in the United States. Previously, the administration provided funding from a $1.5 billion loan authorized in 2024 to support the restart of the Palisades nuclear power plant in Michigan. It is also providing up to $1 billion to help restart the Three Mile Island nuclear facility in Pennsylvania, with plans for the plant to supply electricity to Microsoft’s data centers.

The Iowa nuclear facility was shut down in 2020. Tuesday’s announcement said restarting the plant is expected to create roughly 2,000 jobs.
