Romania has responded to calls from the Trump administration for allied support amid tensions involving Iran by allowing the use of its military infrastructure for defensive operations, according to Romanian Foreign Minister Oana-Silvia Ţoiu.

Speaking at the United Nations, Ţoiu said Romania has authorized activities such as air refueling from its military bases to support allied defense efforts. She emphasized that Romania is not participating in the conflict but is contributing to collective security and diplomatic efforts aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

“We are not part of the war, nor do we intend to become part of the war, but we are part of a diplomatic effort to ensure the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz,” she said.

Romania, a member of NATO, has also backed higher defense spending and plans to increase military and strategic infrastructure investments in the coming years.

The comments came shortly after Romania requested its first-ever emergency session of the United Nations Security Council following a drone strike on an apartment building in Galați. Romanian officials said the drone was of Russian design and injured a mother and child.

Romania argues the incident represents a violation of international law, while Vasily Nebenzya rejected the accusation and called for an independent investigation.

The United States and more than 50 countries supported Romania in a joint statement condemning the strike. U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz described the incident as a reckless Russian drone attack and urged an end to the violence.
