Excitement is building ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026 as fans across the globe eagerly wait to see which stars will make the final squads. Names like Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Kylian Mbappé, Lamine Yamal, Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah are widely expected to feature, barring injuries or unforeseen setbacks.

At the same time, uncertainty remains over several high-profile players, including Neymar, Estêvão and Cristian Romero, whose fitness and selection status continue to be closely monitored.

According to the schedule set by FIFA, all 48 participating nations must submit their preliminary squads by May 11. Each team can name between 35 and 55 players, including four mandatory goalkeepers. However, FIFA will not publish these provisional lists officially unless individual federations decide to reveal them.

The preliminary squad is crucial because any replacement due to injury before the tournament must come from that list. Players omitted from the provisional squad will not be eligible to participate in the World Cup.

Clubs are required to release players to their national teams by May 25. However, footballers involved in the finals of the UEFA Champions League Final, UEFA Conference League Final and CONCACAF Champions Cup Final may remain with their clubs slightly longer with FIFA’s approval.

The final squads must be submitted between May 25 and June 1. Teams can register between 23 and 26 players, including at least three goalkeepers. FIFA will officially unveil all confirmed squads on June 2, when fans will finally get a complete picture of the strongest contenders for the tournament.

Several football powerhouses are also expected to announce their squads earlier. The Brazil national football team could reveal their squad on May 18, followed by the Portugal national football team a day later. Germany national football team are expected to announce their squad on May 21, while the England national football team may do so on May 22.

Meanwhile, the Spain national football team could delay their final announcement until June 1 because of concerns surrounding Lamine Yamal’s fitness. Reports also suggest that the France national football team may release their provisional squad as early as May 13. Defending champions Argentina national football team, however, have yet to indicate a likely announcement date.

With just weeks remaining before kickoff in the United States, Canada and Mexico, the race to finalize squads is becoming one of the biggest talking points in world football. Fans are now waiting to see which nations build the strongest teams, which stars miss out, and who emerges as the surprise inclusion of the tournament.
