Trump cancels Pakistan talks — “We have all the cards”
President Donald Trump has canceled a planned diplomatic trip to Pakistan involving key U.S. negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who were expected to participate in a second round of talks with Iran.
In an interview with Fox News, Trump asserted that the United States currently “has all the cards” in its dealings with Iran. He argued that sending officials on an 18-hour flight for uncertain negotiations was unnecessary and inefficient.
The president emphasized that while the U.S. remains open to communication, it will not engage in prolonged or unproductive discussions. His remarks indicate a shift toward a more assertive diplomatic posture, relying on leverage rather than direct engagement.
Taking to Truth Social, Trump claimed that Iran is facing “tremendous infighting and confusion” within its leadership, suggesting instability at the top levels of governance.
Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi visited Islamabad and held meetings with Pakistan’s prime minister. He described the discussions as constructive and acknowledged Pakistan’s role in promoting regional peace.
However, Araghchi expressed skepticism about Washington’s intentions, stating that it remains unclear whether the United States is genuinely committed to diplomacy.
Earlier, Vice President JD Vance had also planned a visit to Pakistan, but the trip was postponed indefinitely due to urgent engagements at the White House. A previous round of negotiations between the U.S. and Iran failed to yield any agreement.
Experts warn that these developments could further heighten tensions between Washington and Tehran, reducing the chances of a near-term diplomatic breakthrough.
