Israel–Lebanon Ceasefire Begins as Trump Signals Possible Iran Talks Over Weekend

A fragile ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon has come into effect, marking a significant pause in weeks of escalating violence and raising cautious optimism for broader peace efforts across the Middle East. The 10-day truce, announced by U.S. President Donald Trump, is aimed at halting hostilities between Israeli forces and Hezbollah fighters operating from Lebanese territory. 

According to U.S. officials, the ceasefire began with both sides agreeing to suspend offensive operations while retaining the right to self-defense. The agreement is expected to create space for diplomatic negotiations, including long-standing disputes over border demarcation and regional security arrangements. 

The truce follows intense behind-the-scenes diplomacy led by Washington, with Trump confirming he held direct conversations with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun. The move is seen as part of a broader strategy to stabilize the region and revive stalled peace efforts. 

Crucially, Trump indicated that Iran—widely viewed as a key player due to its support for Hezbollah—may enter fresh negotiations with the United States as early as this weekend.
