Authorities say a man suspected of carrying out a deadly shooting at Brown University and of killing a Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) professor has been found dead after a five-day multi-state search across New England.

Providence police identified the suspect as Claudio Neves Valente, 48, a former Brown University student and Portuguese national. Officials said he was found Thursday evening inside a storage facility in New Hampshire. Investigators believe he acted alone and was responsible for both attacks.

Two students were killed and nine others wounded in a shooting Saturday inside a lecture hall at Brown University. Two days later, MIT professor Nuno F. G. Loureiro, 47, was found fatally shot at his home in Brookline, Massachusetts, about 50 miles away. Authorities later confirmed they were investigating a link between the two incidents.

Brown University President Christina Paxson said Neves Valente attended Brown from fall 2000 to spring 2001 as a graduate student in physics and had no current affiliation with the university.

Federal prosecutors said Neves Valente and Loureiro previously studied in the same academic program in Portugal. Neves Valente later entered the United States on a student visa and became a legal permanent resident in 2017. His last known residence was in Miami.

Investigators said a crucial lead came from a Brown University custodian who recognized the suspect after police released images of a person of interest. That tip helped authorities identify the suspect’s vehicle, track its movement using surveillance cameras, and narrow the search area.

Officials said many questions remain unanswered, including the motive behind the attacks. Authorities continue to review evidence as the investigation concludes.
