President Trump Invites Family of Fatally Shot National Guard Member to the White House
President Donald Trump on Sunday said he has invited the family of U.S. Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, the National Guard member who was fatally shot last Wednesday in Washington, D.C. Trump said he spoke with her parents, who were “devastated” by the loss of their daughter.
Beckstrom’s colleague, U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, who was also shot during the incident, remains in critical condition. The president stated he has also discussed a potential White House visit with the families of both service members.
“I said, ‘When you’re ready — because that’s a tough thing — come to the White House. We’re going to honor Sarah,’” Trump told reporters. “And likewise with Andrew, recover or not.”
In recent days, communities across West Virginia have held vigils in honor of the two National Guard members. One such vigil took place Saturday evening at Webster County High School, where Beckstrom had once been a student.
