Trump Terminates All Trade Talks with Canada
President Trump has abruptly ended all trade negotiations with Canada after calling an anti-tariff ad “fraudulent.” The move escalates tensions between the two allies, already locked in tariff disputes over steel and autos.
Trump Terminates All Trade Talks with Canada
WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump announced Thursday that all trade negotiations with Canada have been officially terminated. The decision came after Trump accused Ottawa of producing a “fraudulent advertisement” featuring former U.S. President Ronald Reagan criticizing tariffs.
Trump posted on Truth Social, saying: “Based on their egregious behavior, ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE HEREBY TERMINATED.”
Ontario Premier Doug Ford had earlier said that the anti-tariff ad had caught Trump’s attention. The ad portrayed Reagan saying tariffs cause “job losses and trade wars.”
Trump’s decision adds new tension to the already strained trade relationship between Washington and Ottawa. Canada responded, saying it will not allow unfair U.S. access to its markets if trade talks fail.
The U.S. had already imposed tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum, and autos earlier this year, prompting retaliation from Ottawa. Both sides had been in talks for weeks seeking a potential deal ahead of next year’s review of the 2020 North American free-trade agreement between the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
