Trump Pushes for Redistricting to Secure Republican Majority in House
Washington, August 2025 — U.S. President Donald Trump is pushing Republican-led states to redraw their U.S. House of Representatives districts to protect their slim 219-212 majority in next year’s midterm elections.
Analysts say this move could allow Republicans to dominate the House for decades. Republicans hold control of 23 state legislatures compared to Democrats’ 15, giving them an advantage in redistricting, a practice known as gerrymandering.
Texas has already approved a new map expected to give Republicans five more seats. In response, California Democrats proposed a map to add five seats for their party.
Critics, including former Republican Congressman Adam Kinzinger, warn this could damage U.S. democracy by locking one party into power and reducing voter influence.
Democrats say Trump’s push amounts to rigging the elections, while Republicans argue population shifts to conservative states like Texas and Florida justify the changes.
