[Canberra, 27 July 2025] — Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has condemned the Israeli blockade on Gaza and the obstruction of humanitarian aid as “a grave step against humanity and morality,” calling it a blatant defiance of international law.
In an interview with Australian public broadcaster ABC, Albanese stated, “It’s absolutely clear—cutting off food supply is a violation of international law. And that’s exactly the decision Israel made back in March.”
Recognition of Palestine: "Not at This Moment"
When asked whether Australia, like France, is planning to recognize Palestine as an independent state, Albanese replied that Australia is not taking such a step “at this moment.” However, he acknowledged that if the situation allows in the future, such a move could be considered “as a pathway forward.”
Still, he expressed reservations, saying, “How do we exclude Hamas from this process?”—implying that until this question is resolved, a sustainable solution remains out of reach.
Hamas’s Response
The Palestinian resistance group Hamas has already announced its willingness to hand over control of Gaza to an internationally supported interim government—but only under the condition of a permanent ceasefire. Hamas has made it clear that it will not lay down its arms as long as Israel occupies Palestinian territory.
Growing International Pressure
The Australian Prime Minister’s comments are part of a growing wave of global criticism, where human rights organizations and world leaders are highlighting the humanitarian consequences and legal violations resulting from Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.
International observers say that criticism from a Western ally like Australia could further intensify diplomatic pressure on Israel.
