Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to host a grand military parade this coming September to commemorate the end of the Second World War. But this event is not just about remembering history—it could mark a major turning point in global geopolitics.
According to British daily The Times, Xi aims to bring together U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin at the event. The goal is not just diplomatic courtesy, but to send a new message about the global balance of power.
Putin has already accepted the invitation, and his presence is nearly confirmed. Xi is also expected to invite Trump to the September 3 parade. Xi hopes the joint appearance of the three leaders will symbolically convey a message of peace and stability to the world.
Chinese political analyst Jin Canrong said, “If Trump participates, it will be a historic moment—showcasing the unity of leadership from China, Russia, and the United States.” He added, “It may signal a new bilateral or trilateral balance in the post–Cold War world.”
Taiwanese analyst Wen-Ti Sung believes the event also serves a domestic political purpose—to divert public attention from mounting internal pressures. China’s slowing economy and growing political dissatisfaction may be key motivators behind the grand spectacle.
Tensions between China and the United States are currently high. In early April, the U.S. imposed tariffs on goods from over 180 countries, with rates for China reaching as high as 140%. In retaliation, China slapped a 125% tariff on U.S. imports. Despite the friction, the two nations reached a 90-day trade truce on May 12.
Trump and Xi have already spoken by phone, at the request of the White House. Meanwhile, Trump has also expressed interest in meeting Putin, increasing the likelihood of this proposed trilateral summit.
Analysts believe this event is not just about the past—it’s being used as a strategic tool in current global power plays.
