[Kuala Lumpur, July 13, 2025] – Former Malaysian Prime Minister and centenarian statesman Mahathir Mohamad is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital due to fatigue. According to a statement from his office, he felt unwell after attending a birthday celebration on Sunday and was admitted to the National Heart Institute in Kuala Lumpur.

History of Heart Problems

The veteran Southeast Asian politician has a long history of heart disease. He has undergone multiple bypass surgeries and has been hospitalized several times in recent years. Most recently, he was admitted to the hospital in October 2024 due to a respiratory infection.

Mahathir’s office stated:
“He is currently under observation and resting. However, doctors are optimistic that he will be able to return home by this evening.”

Drove Himself to the Birthday Celebration

Mahathir personally drove himself to the picnic-style birthday celebration on Sunday. The event also marked the 99th birthday of his wife, Siti Hasmah Mohamad. Local media reported that he rode a bicycle for about an hour at the event and later felt fatigued.

Although Mahathir’s actual birthday was last Thursday, the major celebration was held on Sunday.

Political Legacy

Mahathir Mohamad served as Malaysia’s Prime Minister from 1981 to 2003, making him the longest-serving leader in the country’s history. He returned to power in 2018, leading the opposition coalition to victory. However, internal conflicts led to the collapse of his second government in 2020 after just two years.

A former physician, Mahathir has remained politically active even at the age of 100. He continued serving as a Member of Parliament until 2022.
