[Jerusalem, July 2, 2025] — Following Iran’s suspension of cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Israel’s Foreign Minister Gidon Sa’ar has called for the reactivation of international sanctions against the country.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, Gidon Sa’ar said,
“Now is the time to activate the Snapback mechanism! I call on the E3 countries — Germany, France, and the United Kingdom — to reimpose all sanctions against Iran.”
According to the 2015 nuclear deal, or the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the Snapback mechanism is a provision that allows the automatic reinstatement of previous United Nations sanctions if the terms of the deal are violated.
In the latest development, Iran’s newly elected President Masoud Pezeshkian on Wednesday signed a new law suspending all government cooperation with the IAEA.
Calling this decision “shameful,” the Israeli Foreign Minister further stated,
“This is a complete abandonment of Iran’s international nuclear obligations and commitments. The international community must take strict action immediately and use every available means to stop Iran’s nuclear ambitions.”
For context, former U.S. President Donald Trump withdrew the United States from the JCPOA deal in 2018 and reimposed economic and military sanctions on Iran. Later in 2020, his administration requested the activation of the Snapback mechanism at the United Nations, although European allies did not respond positively.
Then in 2021, President Joe Biden came to power and revoked some of Trump’s sanctions and canceled the Snapback request.
The announcement of Iran’s suspension of cooperation with the IAEA comes at a time when direct military clashes between Iran and Israel occurred just weeks ago.
During this 12-day conflict that began on June 13, Israel launched airstrikes on Iranian military and nuclear facilities, to which Iran responded with ballistic missile and drone attacks. Subsequently, the United States also conducted airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear sites.
This conflict ended on June 24 with a ceasefire brokered by the United States. However, shortly afterward, Iran declared the suspension of all cooperation with the IAEA, prompting Israel to increase international pressure for the reinstatement of sanctions.
