[Puri, Odisha – June 29, 2025] — At least three devotees were killed and nearly 50 others injured in a tragic stampede during the Jagannath Rath Yatra festival in Puri, a coastal city in India’s eastern state of Odisha, on Sunday morning. As in previous years, hundreds of thousands of devotees had gathered for the annual event, but overcrowding and security lapses turned the celebration into a tragedy.

Sudden crowd surge during the procession — all victims from Khurda

According to a report by India Today, around 4:30 AM on Sunday, a massive crowd gathered in front of Gundicha Temple at Saradabali for the deity’s darshan. The crowd suddenly surged and became uncontrollable. District Collector Siddharth Shankar Swain said the unexpected crowd swell led to a stampede, killing Basanti Sahu, Prabhati Das, and Premkant Mahanti — all residents of Khurda district, about 60 km from Puri. Six of the injured are reportedly in critical condition.

Chariot jam causes earlier chaos, over 600 devotees fell ill

Earlier on Friday, the chariot of Balabhadra, named Taladhwaja, got stuck at a narrow turn in the Balagandi area, sparking chaos among devotees. Due to extreme heat and overcrowding, around 625 people fell ill. Many were admitted to hospitals and medical camps for treatment.

Over 1 million pilgrims overwhelm police and medical teams

Additional DGP Sanjay Kumar stated that over 1 million pilgrims had arrived in Puri by Saturday. Chief Medical Officer Dr. Kishore Satapathy said most patients were treated on an outpatient basis, but many remain hospitalized.

Religious significance of Rath Yatra and massive turnout

The Jagannath Rath Yatra is one of the largest Hindu festivals in India. Every year, Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra are taken in grand wooden chariots from the main temple to the Gundicha Temple. After a few days, they return in a ritual called Niladri Bije. The event attracts millions of devotees from across India and abroad.

Health Ministry concern and call for better preparedness

Odisha Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling expressed concern over the rise in health emergencies and accidents this year due to scorching heat and heavy crowds. He emphasized the need to strengthen safety and healthcare measures during future festivals.

An investigation into the incident has begun, and authorities have promised to enhance safety protocols to prevent future tragedies. All stakeholders now hope that no religious celebration ever leads to loss of life again.
