In response to the recent U.S. airstrikes, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy has warned that any escalation by Iran would be "a catastrophic mistake." He stated that further deterioration of the situation could have disastrous consequences for the entire world.

Speaking on the BBC Breakfast program on Monday, Lammy said:

“This situation must be de-escalated immediately. We do not want it to spiral into something far worse.”

He confirmed that he had spoken directly with Iran’s foreign minister and issued a clear warning to Tehran:

“Extreme caution must be exercised — to ensure the situation does not spiral out of control.”

Speaking on the military strength of the United States, Lammy added:

“At this moment, Iran must treat this matter with the utmost seriousness. It should take a step back and comply with the rules of the UN’s nuclear watchdog, the IAEA.”

Describing the situation as a “moment of peril,” Lammy nevertheless remained hopeful about the power of diplomacy:

“I am an optimist. Yes, these are tense times, but I still believe that diplomacy can — and must — prevail.”

His remarks come at a time when tensions between Iran and the United States in the Middle East have reached a boiling point, and the international community grows increasingly concerned about the risk of full-scale war.
